Poetry Train ~ Celebrity

Toothpick thin in designer skin.
Creates a flashbulb frenzy.
We witness with glee and jealousy,
the internal explosion into crazy.

Remember a month or so ago when Hillary Duff was on the cover of Shape magazine? All skinny with sculpted abs. Maybe those were painted on? Anyway, I am so aggravated by her weight loss. She is too thin now. So far she has been an ok role model for young girls. But will that continue is the question. Which made me think of Paris, Britney, Lindsey etc…. We, as a society, cannot get enough of these girls and their drama. Celebrity’s are American Royalty and when they make we like it and are so jealous. And, when they fall from grace we love it. Can’t get enough of it. I think we feel entitled to viewing their lives 24/7 ’cause its our cash that got them to the top. And, it is so much easier to watch celebrity antics than to confront what is really going on in our society.

Take a ride on the Poetry Train and check out all the great talent.

Yikes. Not that I don’t agree with you, I was just surprised to see it here. Remember several years ago when the advertising industry was using prepubescent girls made up to look like adults, just to get that anorexic, underdeveloped look. I understand that triggered a huge jump in both anorexia and bulemia in the country. Women trying to reach an unattainable goal. Girls trying to live up to society’s idea of what women should look like. Nice, huh?

This kind of thinking has pervaded the small towns in India too. I find it sickening.

Wow, it was kind of a shock to my system to come to your cute, happy little page and find this. D You’re too right, though — I worry about my daughters worshipping these girls, whose lives are so far from normal as to be frightening. It’s tempting to just get rid of the television and play board games all the time.

In a democracy, a people engender the ’society’ they deserve.
Panem et Circenses!
Keep the people ignorant and occupied and they will not disparage of their lack of freedom!

What happened to the beauty of a strong, fit, muscular body?

That’s the ideal I’m trying to teach BOTH my kids — son AND daughter. A body that can’t perform how/when/where you want/need it to is really useless.

And the celebrity issue? Please! If everyone would go read some good books, we’d find lots more people to laud. Normal looking people with amazingly creative minds.

Since I’m working a lot with kid, it heartbreak me everytime a boy or a girl say that they are too big, when they are just average, or muscular!!
I say to them to look at me, and do they think I’m too big(I’m curvatious, but still in good shape). We have a lot to do in that departement!!

Yes, I totally agree. What little girls have to “strive” to be is disgusting. Actually what pre-teens are wearing are too revealing. I never wore that kind of stuff when I was a pre-teen.

This is why I refuse to buy my daughter (who will be 4 soon) a Bratz doll. Barbie, sure she’s fine (especially princess ones) but Bratz No friggin way. Great post Nancy. Now I’m all fired up. razz

Last year at the high school I used to work at, anorexia was becoming a problem. But then look at the fashions and who can wear them?

I truly feel bad for Lindsey, sound like she did not have the best parental influence going.

Your poem was short and sweet, right to the point.

“Toothpick thin in designer skin”
Great line, very strong imagery and statement in one.

But, I will admit I can not have fantasies about Hillary Duff because she is Hannah Montana or whatever of those Disney shows still. Does that help?

I thought it interesting to hear people saying Britney looked out of shape at the VMA’s. From the pictures online, she looked maybe ten pounds overweight. Too skinny or too chubby, there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground.
