Maine Public Radio is great for odd news items. I cannot imagine letting my kids drink a beverage called “Cocaine”. I read one article that said they were going to re-market the drink under the name “Crack”. Even when I used to, uh, do things I should not, I would not have drank anything w. a name like this. Maybe, I am turning into a prude.
Equating celibacy and pre-marital sex to an energy drink and blow, makes no sense at all. When I heard this I just thought, “Huh?”
Really I know it is just me and I am the crazy one…..
‘Cocaine’ pulled from US shelves
An energy drink called Cocaine has been from pulled from US shops nationwide amid concerns about its name.
Redux Beverages LLC, of Las Vegas, said the company plans to sell the drink under a new name for now, reports Sky News.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter last month saying Redux was illegally marketing the drink as a street drug alternative and a dietary supplement.
The FDA cited as evidence the drink’s labelling and website, which included the statements “Speed in a Can,” “Liquid Cocaine” and “Cocaine - Instant Rush.”
The company says Cocaine contains no drugs and is marketed as an energy drink. It has been sold since last August in at least a dozen states.
“Of course, we intended for Cocaine energy drink to be a legal alternative the same way that celibacy is an alternative to premarital sex,” Clegg Ivey, a partner in Redux said.“It’s not the same thing and no one thinks it is. Our product doesn’t have any cocaine in it. No one thinks that it does.”

It’s funny, cocaine coming from a company called redux, who’s name is connected to phen phen, who’s connected to a class action lawsuit that caused hundreds of people to fall over dead from using the products.
Yes, I’d choose celibacy!
I took the herbal equivalent of this once and thought I had done so much speed. My heart was racing and it took a long time to come down. I never took it again. And, it was something that my Chiropracter wanted me to take. I got a new Chiro after that.
I understand your point, Nancy–and agree with it–but kids are always going to want to thumb their collective noses at adults and there’s going to be marketing people wanting to take advantage of that. Hell, look at the Harry Potter books. They’re full of somewhat innocent examples of that. Rowling has an amazing grasp of just what kids want to see.
I’ve never had any of those drinks, Nancy. I don’t even drink coffee. It seems half the people I know at work drink stuff like Red Bull though. I just don’t see the need for all that caffeine.
I was one of those kids….Kind of…..I just think there are smarter ways to thumb our nose at the establishment. And, they won’t realize it has happened until everything has changed.
Good grief, what on earth made them think that would be a good idea? Well, I suppose it has got publicity…
