The Numbers

Monday, May 7th 2007

I heard on Maine Public Radio that Spiderman 3 cost 258 Million to make. But, the cost may be closer to 300 million. Advertising for a film is usually half of the cost. That’s around 150 million. 373 million dollars worth of tickets were sold worldwide in the first six days.

I find these numbers staggering. Usually I don’t pay attention to this kind of thing. But, these numbers blew me away. Almost a billion dollars to make, advertise and see a movie. A movie, people. Nothing against Spiderman, but HOLY COW!

It is just me that finds this a little insane?

The amount of money hollywood spends on films is indeed staggering, especially when you consider how the average family annual income in the USA is under 40K. Movies should set up charity fundraisers to go along with opening night or something. Even if 4% of every ticket sale went to charity that would be a whole heck of a lot of money!

It is insane… good grief. And, I’ve heard that it’s really not that good of a movie either. I’m in the wrong business…. geez

That’s what happens when you have two blockbuster movies in a row. The pockets open up and costs go out of control. And as Rashenbo mentions, the quality often goes down.

Outrageous! It makes me not even want to see the movie…which I wouldn’t anyway. I felt similiar hearing about the spread for the Queen’s visit…all that lush with people going hungry. I sometimes just don’t get it.
