Walk the Line

Monday, March 5th 2007

We watched Walk the Line on Saturday.  I really liked the movie.  I knew Johnny Cash was messed up, but had no idea how bad. His father was so cold.  And, I thought his first wife was a complete and total bitch.  Reese, as June Carter, was amazing. I thought they did a good job with the music.

This movie brought back some memories for me.  My parents had a old turntable and we, my sister and I, used to play all of their records.  And, they had a lot of Johnny Cash.  I know they had the Folsom Prision album.  It was so odd to watch that scene.  Especially, when he was talking about the yellow water. I remember that so vividly. My parentals also had lots of Elvis and Peter, Paul and Mary.  I don’t ever remember my parents playing an album on that turntable. I do know we loved to dance to the music and we could not jump too hard or the record would skip.

While this brought back better memories for me, not so much for my husband.  This is the second movie we watched in a week w. father issues (the other was Flags of our Fathers). Both times he looked at me and said, “Why are Fathers such bastards and why do they wait to tell us they love us on their deathbed “  I have no answers to that, but know my husband hugs and tells his kids that he loves them all the time. He is definately changing that pattern of Fathers, Kids and Love.  My husbands father is buried down the street from where we work.  I notice that my husband slips off and goes to see him a couple of times a week. It is hard to watch someone you love grieve.  But, having been there myself, all I can do is support him.  I cannot walk this journey for him.

There are a lot of movies lately that explore father issues. I’ve noticed that too, Nancy.

I enjoyed Walk the Line and agree that Johnny Cash was quite screwed up. I’d certainly not blame the father for that tho. I would give credit to June Carter for saving him. She might not have had a great voice but she certainy had the strength he needed and the humor as well.

That was a great movie. For some reason it seems the ‘geniuses’ never had it easy. I wonder if anyone really does.
