t13 girl

13 things that I am reading or will be reading in the near future.

From the library:

1. The Architect ~ Keith Ablow. I just realized that this is the 5th book in this series.

2. Sunstroke ~ Jesse Kellerman. I started this the other night and I think it will be good. This is his first novel. Jesse is the son of Faye and Jonathon Kellerman. I really like Faye’s novels. Jonathon’s books have become really gross and weird.
3. Predator ~ Patricia Cornwell. There are just some authors that you grab when you see the book at the library. Cornwell is one of them. The problem is that I have not finished one of her books in a few years. I find her books depressing. How many years has she been writing about Scarpetta and she (Scarpetta) is more fucked up now than when the series first started. I really liked the books then. Now they are just like watching a train wreck, you want to stop but can’t. And, how can Lucy be such a disaster I just have a hard time buying it. These characters need THERAPY! After writing this, I will be taking this right back to the library.

4. The Great Influenza : The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History ~ John M. Barry. This is THE book to read if you are interested in Pandemics. I have only started this and have learned so many things:

In Europe students were required to take biology, chemistry, etc… The courses were tough. In the US anyone who could afford to go to school could get their medical degree. Even if they failed classes and never worked on a patient.

2000 and 2004 was not the only time we have had huge controversy regarding the presidential elections:

The U.S. presidential election of 1876 was perhaps the most disputed presidential election in American history. Samuel Tilden handily defeated Ohio’s Rutherford Hayes in the popular vote, and had 184 electoral votes to Hayes’ 165, with 20 votes yet uncounted. These 20 electoral votes were in dispute: in three states (Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina) each party reported its candidate had won the state, while in Oregon one elector was declared illegal (on account of being an “elected or appointed official”) and replaced. The votes were ultimately awarded to Hayes after a bitter electoral dispute.

Many historians believe that an informal deal was struck to resolve the dispute. In return for Southern acquiescence in Hayes’ election, the Republicans agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction. This deal became known as the Compromise of 1877.

Did you see Florida in there

Anywhere from 50 to 100 million people died in this pandemic.

5. The Monster at Our Door: The Global Threat of Avian Flu ~ Mike Davis. Current information regarding Avian Flu.

6. The 5th Horseman ~ James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. I always read his books. They are usually a good solid read. My favorite book by him is Maxium Ride ~ The Angel Experiment. I LOVED this book! The second book is out now: Maxium RIde ~ School’s Out Forever. The MR kids even have their own blog.

Astrology books I’m reading:

7. The Inner Sky ~ Steven Forrest

8. A Cosmic Science ~ Isabel Hickey. This woman was way before her time.

9. Celestial Renaissance: A Revolution of Astrology ~ Kelly Lee Phipps. This is by my Astrology teacher.

10. Parker’s Astrology ~ Julia and Derek Parker. A huge volume of information. They packed so much  into this book, that it can be overwhelming.

11. Chiron: Rainbow Bridge Between the Inner and Outer Planets ~ Barbara Hand Clow. Chiron is all about healing your wounds and becoming the mentor.

Audiobooks:

12: Harry Potter 1: I read an article that said Jim Dale has created over 130 voices for the HP audio books. He won a Grammy in 2000 and 2006 for his work on the HP books. After reading that I just had to listen to them. So far they are great.

13. Gnostic Gospels ~ Elaine Pagels. These CD’s were mind blowing for my girlfriend.

awww. . . I really like Cornwell. I’ve read all her books except for the Jack the Ripper one. Part of the appeal is the train wreck!

Great list! My list is up early!

I feel the same way about Cornwell.

I ADORE Jim Dale’s reading of the Harry Potter books; in fact, I listen to chapters on my iPod like listening to songs…

Hi … I’ve got fed up with Kay Scarpetta too, and her bloody niece! However, if you like really intelligent and gripping books here’s two you MAY not have read:
‘The Pelican Brief’ John Grisham
‘Blood Work’ Michael Connelly
or to laugh out loud
‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’
Enjoy.

Argh. Not the avian flu! My husband’s been working with the preventive medicine side of it for months, and it’s coming out my ears. )

We listened to Harry Potter 1 on our last driving vacation. I must remember to get the 2nd one for this year’s trip.

Boy you do some deep reading! Yikes, I read to get lost in a story. Don’t know if I want to read about the bird flu!! But the Potter books on tape sound interesting. Might have to look those up for the long drive this summer! Great list, thanks for sharing and for visiting my T13!

What a list. They all sound interesting. I’m on Tam of Rivals by Doris Goodwin about Lincoln’s cabinet. Extremely interesting–but I’m pretty much a non-fiction reader. However, I doubt that I’d read (finish) this many in a year.

Thanks for visiting my TT.

WOW! As someone above said, you read some deep shit! hehe (Okay, I’m paraphrasing!)

I’ve read The Gnostic Bible by Elain Pagel and she is good and quite academic in her research. That whole realm of discussion is really fascinating.

Email me if you want to chat about stuff like that. I’ve read a ton of books on it and keep reading more. (I’m into the “woo woo” stuff and love it!)

Thanks for stopping by Casa de Snark!

I’m so with you about Scarpetta - I actually haven’t read the last couple of books because she’s so messed up and depressing. I actually think that she’s mirroring Cornwall’s real life - did you hear about the time the author was being hunted by an FBI agent because she’d had an affair with his wife? Wacky!

Loved your list. I’m a voracious reader, and always looking for book suggestions or recommendations. You have some good ones on here!

My first ever T13 is up, and I can tell I’m going to have to be much more creative with mine - all of yours are just very imaginative! )

Have a great day!

It’s interesting to know that elections haven’t changed all that much. I have at least as many books stacked up waiting! I need a beach and a lounge chair! Do you see that in my astrology future?!

I’m a Crapricorn, just in case you didn’t know that. I have issues. I’m sure you must have known that. )

I am reading “Forgiving Our Parents, Forgiving Ourselves”. I’m not going to put it down until I’ve accomplished something. Wish me luck!
