Zimbabwe

Thursday, June 23rd 2005

So, I am working the counter today, ‘cuz we were shorthanded. During a lull in the action I read the paper. I really should read the paper more often. I read so many amazing stories. Usually, I skim the headlines via the web. And, I don’t watch TV news.

I had no idea of the horror going on in Zimbabwe. The government is systematically tearing down the houses in the slums. There is 80% unemployment in this country…. Now, apparently, the destruction is going into the countryside. Not just homes get destoyed, but food sources as well. I found many interesting articles at BBC, be sure to read the comments from around the world, Christian Science Monitorand from Amnesty Int.. Over 300,000 have become homeless.

This is all government sponsered.

How come this is not all over the news. But, why would it be when TOm and Katie are much more important. You barely here about the genocide in Darfour. It is just so overwhelming to me that people are so amazingly cruel to each other…..

I know how fortunate I am to live in the US. And, I get so angry w. our government, because we should be held to the highest standard. We, the United States of America, have within our power to do amazing things for the poorest of our citizens to raise them up: health insurance, living wage, clean air, child care etc…. We could, if we choose, help other countries w. their citizens that need help. We could be the Heros. We and all developed nations have the power and the cash for real change to take place. Our goal should be the betterment of all citizens of our planet. When we start to believe that we are all interconnected and start to think inclusively than we will have achieved something that we can be proud of. But, right now, all we want to do is kill each other and destroy our planet.

This makes me sad and I worry for our children and the mess they will inherit…..

UPDATE: 6/24/05: MORE FROM THE BBC.

What happens when even your own neighbors won’t help, don’t see the problem and have done the same in their countries. And, ask the question what about the Congo

South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki has questioned why the West is so concerned by Zimbabwe but makes relatively little noise about other African countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, where some three million people died in a civil war, and where armed bands kill, rape and loot with impunity in some areas

I guess I am naive in my hope that everyone will someday wake up and love one another no matter your race, religion or who you choose to love.
