Here is the reason I am now having heart palpitations:
It all started on Tuesday, when my lovely son came to me and yelled, “I have nothing to wear to this dance!”
To which I calmly replied, “Of course you do.”
“Mom I have nothing and I am not going to look like a dork!”
“You are not going to look like a dork. Why don’t you go look and see if what goodies you may have in your closet.”
To which he replies, “Nothing, I have nothing!”
Off he goes into his closet, where he finds the new shirts his dad just bought him. Nice, lovely short sleeve button up shirts. Completely, perfect for a dance. Now, he is wearing his khakis and a shirt that is a nice tan and blue plaid.
“I have to wear a tie.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Yes, I have to wear a tie! It says I have to wear a tie!” my son flipping out about his fashion statement.
“No, my dear, there is nothing in the letter about a tie. Why don’t you put the tie in the side pocket of your pants and then if you have to wear it you will have it.”
Grumbling and mumbling, “I guess.”
Fast forward to Weds. morning. We are in the car on our way to school, and Tommy starts shoving and stuffing his clothes into the bottom pocket of his backpack. “Tommy what are you doing ”
I get the “My mother is crazy look” and he says, “Taking my clothes to school.”
“Why ”
“So, I will have them in case you don;t pick me up.” Like, duh!
“Honey, I am picking you up. ANd, you cannot leave your clothes in the bottom of your backpack all day.”
What, if you don;t pick me up. You have a meeting and I won’t have my clothes. I need them!”
“Tommy, I am picking you up and YOU ARE NOT taking you clothes with you. They will be all wrinkled.”
He looks at me, “Promise.”
“Yes.”
“Have a nice day, kids!”
My kid has never acted like this and is so excited. Yes, I did pick him up and the minute we got to work, he changed!
I went to my appointment and it ran a little over, and wouldn’t ya know a message from my son.
“Mom, it’s me. Where are you I am going to be late and you said you would be here.”
I show up on time and we race thru Wendy’s so he is not starving and we get to his friend’s house before the friend even gets home from practice. The boys walk to the dance and ……..
I pick up my oldest child at 9:30 pm. He finally comes out, high fives two 7th graders and he is strutsto the car. He hops into the car and we are off.
As fast he can talk he is talking and rummaging in his pockets, as only boys can do, “I had a great night. I danced 4 slow dances,
and my friends wanted to know if I liked this girl and I do, so I asked her out, so now we are going out. I hugged her and kissed her and hey, if I get a ride can I go to funtown ”
Slaps the overhead car lights on and says, “This is a picture of her, SEE And, she gave me that hat, but I couldn’t keep it.
Meanwhile I am back on dancing girl kiss Light in eyes, heart palpitations, need to pull over, don’t run off the road.
“AAHHH, slow down. I am stick back on dancing and kissing. I guess you did have a good time.”
“Ya need me to repeat ”
“Yes, son, how about who is this girl. And, you kissed her Where the lips How did you dance I guess you had fun then ”
“Weeelll, I asked her to go out and she said yes. So, we are going out.”
And, at that moment, I become my father, “Where are you going When are you going ”
I can remember telling my father the same thing and he said , “Where ya going.”
No where Dad.
“Didn’t you just say you are going somewhere ”
“NO, I said I am going out with XXXX.”
“Right, so where are you going ”
“MMOOOMMM”
“HONEY, what is she talking about ”
I am sure you have all had a similar experience.
“MMMOOOOMMM. We are just going out.”
OMG! He means he has a GIRLFRIEND! And, he just had his FIRST KISS! OMG!
Finally, we get home. I stop him in the garage and make him show me how he danced with her. I place my hands on his shoulders. ANd he puts them around his neck and his hands on my hips. There was still space between them, or so he showed me. We get home and he informs his dad of the events…..Dad is handling it better than I am.
He gets to bed and DH and I talk and I say at least he told us. I NEVER told my parents anything. Dh agrees and we go to sleep.
Tommy said that it took it a LONG time to go sleep. Remember that When the night was so great that you kept re-living it and thinking about it.
On Thursday, he finds a ride to Funtown and I, incorrectly assumed that that parent was going to be at Funtown. Nope. There were tons of parents from our school, but no one directly looking out for him. So, apparently his friend has a girlfriend too. So, my kid was at Funtown all afternoon with his “girlfriend”. Holding hands, and I know some kissing went on, but cannot get a read on how much. SHe won him a poster and he won her something.
That poster went right up on the wall next to her picture. :SIGH:
I get home from work on Friday and am TOLD that he needs an email address right away. She has one and he needs one too. Especially since she is leaving the country for TWO WEEKS. They need ot keep in touch.
So, here I am. My 12 yo has a GIRLFRIEND! My dh, is quite thankful that it’s a GIRL!
I seem to be having a hard time with this. How come he is still not TWO
